We traveled to Block Island for our last summer vacation as a family of 4 before Mia joined the crew. We’ve been to Block a few times, but this was the first time as a family. Block has such great beaches, restaurants, and charming spots. It’s a relatively small island, but has a lot of scenic spots to explore. You can spend your day riding bikes, relaxing at the beach, or in town at one of the charming restaurants.
Where To Stay
We booked one of the Seaside Homes through the Spring House and stayed with family (total: 8 of us). The cottage was great – had an open living room, kitchen, 3 bedrooms with 2 1/2 bathrooms and plenty of room for our group. I would definitely do this again if we go back. The hotels in Block are super small so if you want more space, a cottage is the way to go.
Where To Eat
I really enjoyed the restaurants in Block Island. So many spots with fresh fish and perfect summer cocktails (mocktails at the time!).
The Oar: The Oar is a casual dining spot (part of the 1661 Inn) with outside seating overlooking the water. It’s really great for kids – there’s games, space for the kids to move around, and beautiful views of the boats. I love the sushi there! They’re also famous for their mudslide – it’s a must try! The Oar doesn’t take reservations so we went early and avoided the crowds. Every time we visit the Block, the Oar is top of my list.
The Spring House: This was definitely more fancy than other options we tried, but the views and the atmosphere can’t be beat. The Spring House has the most amazing lawn (with adirondack chairs) overlooking the water. There was even live music the night we went.
Payne’s Donuts: I woke up early one morning to drive to Payne’s. They have delicious classic donuts (3 flavors) and everyone enjoyed the early morning treat!
The Surf Shack & Beach Bar: This place made me feel like I was on vacation. It’s a part of Block Island Beach House with amazing views of the beach. There was a great bar with different seating areas to enjoy a beverage or meal. We loved the poke bowl! I would definitely go back here for another bite and to enjoy the sunset.
The National: We had a parents night out during our trip and sat outside at the National for a cocktail and appetizer. There were fire pits, live music and the vibe was just right!
Persephone’s Kitchen: This is such a sweet spot to grab an iced latte and a breakfast sandwich.
Other places to try: Kimberly’s (for fresh seafood), Payne’s Dock/Shoal’s for a lobster roll, and The Beachhead (for casual dining).
What To Do
Mohegan Bluffs: A stairway of 141 steps leads you to a small, rocky beach with beautiful bluff views. It’s a bit challenging with younger kids, but if you take your time (or hold the kiddos), the views are totally worth it! The kids loved climbing and stacking the rocks and getting their feet wet. It’s on my must see list when visiting Block Island!
1661 Farm & Gardens: We had such a fun morning here! You can buy food to feed the animals and there was a variety of animals to see like camels, goats, and llamas!
Beaches: There are a variety of beaches to check out on Block Island and it’s the perfect way to spend a day! We generally packed lunches at the cottage and set up for a few hours on the beach. You can also rent bikes to explore the island.
Lighthouses: We loved visiting the Southeast Lighthouse. You can do a quick tour of the building and even walk to the top! The kids thought looking out from the top was so neat.
Nightlife: If you have a chance to get out at night, there are a lot of fun bars and spots to check out! One of my favorites is Captain Nicks (a dueling piano bar). I loved grabbing a drink at Shoals (Payne’s Dock) to see the sunset and sit outside. The Spring House is also an ideal spot to hang and listen to live music!
Ice cream: Head to the Ice cream Place for a selection of over 40 flavors! The kids loved it!
We had such a great week and can’t wait to visit again!
